Programs

Children begin to learn long before they enter school. Building upon successful foundations that were molded at home, St. John’s School’s preschool and junior kindergarten program is both academically and socially rich. Harnessing preschoolers’ and junior kindergarteners’ imaginations and connecting the curriculum to their perspective backgrounds are just part of an education at St. John’s School. Through active, inclusive, discovery-based learning St. John’s School preschoolers and junior kindergarteners develop both a passion and an aptitude for learning.

Curriculum

Beginning in preschool and continuing through junior kindergarten, St. John’s School’ students are immersed in a rich variety of subjects in order to better prepare them for kindergarten. Specific curricular objectives include:

  • Beginning letter sounds (phonemic awareness)
  • Letter and word recognition (decoding)
  • Development of emergent reading skills
  • Counting and number/object correspondence (number sense)
  • Sorting and shapes (pre-algebra and geometry)
  • Scientific observation and experimentation
  •  Development of gross and fine motor skills through participation in visual and performing arts, music, and physical education
  • Religious and spiritual development
  • Growth of a strong, positive self image and both independent and group social skills

Religious Affiliation

St. John’s School was created to be a model of God’s love and grace. Similar to other Episcopal schools, St. John’s was established not solely as a community for Christians, like a parish church, but as a diverse community of educational and human formation, for people of all faiths and backgrounds. It is also a distinguishing characteristic of St. John’s School that we seek to integrate religious and spiritual formation into an overall curriculum that is both rigorous and challenging.  At St. John’s we invite our students, parents, faculty, and staff – Episcopalians and non-Episcopalians, Christians and non-Christians, people of distinct faith traditions, and people of no faith tradition – to seek clarity about their own beliefs and to honor those traditions more fully and faithfully in their own lives.

Excellent Staff

Our staff members are under the direction of our Preschool Director, Mary Circle, who oversees the program and ensures its quality, academic viability, and safety.  Mrs. Circle has been with St. John’s School for fifteen years.  All our staff are experienced, fully certificated in Early Childhood Education, and have been selected for their enthusiasm and genuine love of children.  They stay in regular communication with parents and keep them informed about their child’s progress.  The staff also understands the accelerated curriculum of St. John’s K-8 School and dovetails their programs so the students are prepared for success in our elementary and middle school.
